“Havah…to breathe, air, life” by Shahzia Sikander

As we kick off Women’s History Month, we could not be more excited about Shahzia Sikander’s outdoor multimedia installation “Havah...to breathe, air, life,” whose sculptures centered around themes of women and justice, a theme akin to our own ethos, are currently gracing Madison Square Park and atop the Courthouse of the First Department of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. A “citizen of the world”, Ms. Sikander who hails from Pakistan and lives in New York City received the prestigious United States Medal of Arts in 2012 and has been acknowledged for renewing interest in the Indo-Persian miniature form and revolutionizing the  feminist neo-miniature movement worldwide.

“Havah…to breathe, air, life” consists of two sculptures of women; Witness, which sits at the entrance of Madison Square Park and 25th Street, and NOW, which is perched atop the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court and is the first female figure to be installed there. With her limbs as tree roots, her hair braided and coiled like a ram’s horn, her head held high and eyes wide open, Sikander’s golden women sculptures encompass symbols of power, strength, durability, and femininity. Whereas “Justice” throughout history has been symbolized as a woman, blindfolded, and holding scales, Sikander’s allegorical women suggest a new vision of woman and power in the justice system. Complete with a decorative jabot at the neckline, a nod to the lace collar worn by the late, trailblazing United States Supreme Court associate justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Witness and NOW remind us to “reverse stereotypes about gender, race, immigrants, and the unfamiliar” as noted by the artist.

Trailblazing Women

New York City has only five statues honoring female historical figures. (There are 145 male historical statues.) The five statues include Joan of Arc, Golda Meir, Eleanor Roosevelt, Har­riet Tubman, and the American author Gertrude Stein, pictured above at Bryant Park. Stein’s placement near the New York Public Library reflects her significant literary contributions, including plays, librettos, film scripts, and novels, as well as her influence on American writers. But Stein (and the others) won’t be alone for too much longer. This week during the start of Women’s History Month, NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray announced four more permanent monuments (along with the previously announced statue of Representative Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress) that will honor "the trailblazing women who have helped shape New York City." The statues will depict Billie Holiday, the iconic singer; Elizabeth Jennings Graham, who fought racial segregation in 19th century New York City; Dr. Helen Rodríguez Trías, a leader in pediatrics and public health; and Katherine Walker, one of the first female light house keepers who is credited with saving at least fifty people. "We cannot tell the story of New York City without recognizing the invaluable contributions of the women who helped build and shape it," McCray told reporters at a press conference. “In honoring these four trailblazers today, New Yorkers will have the opportunity to see powerful women who made history receive the recognition they deserve."

Future is Goddess

Future is Goddess, a new exhibit at local gallery Pen + Brush, features the work of Italian-born artist Michela Martello. Her work is a blend of "strength and softness, of domesticity and demolition" and "takes a stand against the anxieties of 2017 and affirms women's power and potential in response to our current political and social uncertainty." The artist, who resides in Brooklyn, has a background in illustration and produces murals and artwork on textiles. This exhibit, an eight-year survey of her work, is an intentional play on the empowering phrase, the “Future is Female,” with the role of Goddess "signifying a transformative rise in feminine power[.]" Among other pieces, the exhibit features a site-specific graffiti mural on the gallery wall with three goddesses representing a mixing of cultural backgrounds, to which viewers are invited to interact by tagging. The exhibit is on view through April 22, 2017.
